Corbels
Corbels are structural stones that act a little bit like a bracket. They jut out from a wall allowing weight loading structures to be built above an otherwise vertical wall - a balcony for instance. They are often seen on the corners of buildings, above the quoin stones, where the roof line comes out further than the wall.
Corbels can be highly decorative as often seen on Classical buildings or of a more modest design, as seen on more modern buildings!
Despite their overall structural nature, they are often used as a feature stone and a corbel can link in with a bandcourse or cornice or used on its own as a stand out component of your building's design.
